For Sense of Place we’ll be listening to sessions we recorded in Austin all week along with a bunch of great new and old music representing the music capital that Austin has become.  And it is SXSW this week too so we’ll be reporting on that and playing back four brand new SXSW sessions on the Friday show.

And that is just on the radio.  Follow us here at the World Cafe Tumblr for free downloads, Spotify playlists, videos, super galleries of everything from tacos to records stores and more!

Here is how it will shake out…

Monday: A new interview to catch up with Alejandro Escovedo  before we play back one of his best World Cafe sessions (from 2010) for our Vintage Cafe series.  Also, in the second hour, an intimate conversation with Jim Eno, the drummer for Spoon, who is turning into a much in-demand producer. We found a new Austin band to introduce you to for our World Cafe: Next this week. They are Orthy, a dance rock band that grew out of leader Ian Orth’s Learning Secrets dance parties in Austin.  Learning Secrets is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Tuesday:  We start off with Shakey Graves, the performer called the best one man show in Austin.  The second hour is all about SXSW as we talk with co-founder Roland Swenson who is still running the Festival founded in 1987.  Plus All Songs Considered’s  Bob Boilen gives us the five bands he is most looking forward to at SXSW.

Wednesday: It’s the group that won the Austin Music Award  for Best Indie and Best Folk Band in 2013, the charming Wild Child.  In the second hour another session with the Austin psychedelic band The Black Angels,  plus KUTX’s  Matt Reilly tells us his 5  favorite new Austin bands.

Thursday: Very excited to have 16 year Austin resident super-songwriter Patty Griffin in to play live and introduce a new song she hasn’t recorded yet.  In the second hour not only does KUTX’s Jody Denberg give us his take on Austin music history, but we have a live Austin Latin Roots with the 9-piece Grupo Fantasma with music from their forthcoming album.

Friday:  We bring back the goods from SXSW with 4 live sessions including Austin’s Bright Light Social Hour, Wye Oak, Phox and Kins.

Both Sense of Place and Latin Roots are made possible by a grant from The Wyncote Foundation.
