In honor of Mardi Gras today’s Final Vinyl is James “Sugar Boy” Crawford classic “Jock-A-Mo”.  The song’s lyrics come from old Mardi Gras Indian chants, and the tune was a hit during the 1954 Carnival.  Crawford was only 19 at the time he recorded it.  Many notable artists went on to cover it: The Dixie Cups (they changed the name to “Iko Iko”), Dr John, and Cyndi Lauper.  Sadly Crawford’s career was cut short when a 1963 police beating left him in a coma.  It took him two years to recover and he opted not to return to music, though in the years before his 2012 death he started to perform again.  Read more about him here.
