RIP – John Fry of Big Star – Memphis Music Hall of Fame.

We met John Fry on our World Cafe Sense of Place visit to Memphis when we visited Ardent studios.  The respect from everyone there toward him and his accomplishment with Ardent Studios and particularly with Big Star was still palpable. One of the pioneers in recording rock in Memphis he was particularly enamored of Big Star and gave Chris Bell, Alex Chilton, Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel use of Ardent which in many ways became their instrument.  He worked on both #1 Record and Radio City. During our visit he put the 16 track tape of Big Star up on the mixing board and took us through the mix. You can see John at the board in this video clip.
