Dorothy – “Wicked Ones”

SXSW 2015 – OEB Score: 8 ; Popularity Index: 6
Pairs Well With…Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Lissie, The Black Keys

The increasingly rare ‘killer new rock band’ moniker is easy transferable to LA’s Dorothy, a blues rock outfit with both personal grit and songwriting ability could hang Katy Perry/Kelly Clarkson powerhouses if it was taken in a different direction.  The songs on 2014’s self-titled, debut EP are all hard hitting, reverb heavy and showcases for Dorothy’s (the band is named after the singer) sick, powerful vocals.  Girl can hit some notes.  While there’s nothing new to speak of in terms of redefining genres, sometimes music is best when it slaps you in the face instead of asking your name.  The traditional nature of blues gives Dorothy’s hard rock template a classic perspective, a great opportunity to pick up fans with a sure-to-be infectious SXSW set next month.
